British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
