Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
