The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
