As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
