Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to question particular calls made by the official, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
